Working as nursing activity manager in the field

As a nursing manager, you will generally manage teams. In a hospital, you may be required to work in any department.

For example, you could help organize a mass vaccination campaign or participate in health assessments when there is a mass influx of people fleeing conflict. You may also lead a prevention programme, for example to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS, or work in a nutrition centre, or on malaria.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise the nursing care provided by teams in the various contexts where MSF operates (hospitals, clinics) to ensure good nursing practices while respecting human dignity, with the aim of improving the quality of care and listening to patients.
  • Provide technical assistance when needed to ensure the quality of nursing care, confidentiality, traceability of information, patient monitoring and the application of therapeutic and sterilisation rules.
  • Manage, train and supervise nursing staff or community healthcare providers in activities such as recruitment, job description definition, skills development, staff briefing/debriefing, staff evaluation and schedule monitoring
  • Participate and ensure good resource management:
    pharmacy management and orders
    administrative procedures, patient files, registers, data collection

Requirements

  • At least three years of study: certified nursing degree 
  • Two years of professional nursing experience after graduation, preferably in the following areas: internal medicine, emergency care, paediatrics, neonatology, intensive care, geriatrics, surgery. Versatile experience is required (adults and children)
  • At least six months of clinical experience in the last 24 months
  • Diploma in tropical medicine (minimum eight weeks of classes) or two months of nursing experience in a tropical environment. A diploma in tropical medicine is not mandatory for nursing staff specialising in emergency care.
  • Fluent English and/or French
  • Available for a minimum of six months
